You’re a clever consumer. You’ve done your research before you get quotes, you’ve checked the company reviews before you call, and you are going to get a selection of 3 quotes so you can compare services and products. But how do you choose? Who is offering the best value for money?
Well, here is some of our advice on how to choose the best of the bunch.
Why does one quote cost more than the other?
There may be a number of reasons for this. For example, are all of these fencing contractors supplying the same products? As the old saying goes, buy cheap, buy twice.
Always read the quotes carefully and ensure the products being supplied are a quality you are happy with. Make sure, especially with landscaping, they have included appropriate drainage, and in the case of fencing, proper footing for the posts.
Another reason may be demand. If you have 3 landscapers quote you in May. Two are booked up till August (A good sign as they are clearly popular) and the other can start work straight away, the contractor that can start straight away will be quoting much more aggressively as they will be more in need of the work and there may be a reason for that.
One other piece of advice is, be wary of landscapers and fencing contractors that quote on the spot and don’t provide their price in writing. This often means they are simply pushing you to make a buying decision on the spot and this may not be the best thing to do.
How much skill is required?
For some jobs a low quote makes sense. A tap replacement is pretty simple and doesn’t take much training. But if you were having your boiler replaced, you would want the job done right, regardless of cost.
In landscaping terms, having a panel on a fence replaced isn’t a highly skilled job but you want it done well. But if you are looking to install a water feature or a custom wood construction the job is not so easy. You need to use a contractor that has the required craftsmanship, knowledge and skill to make your desired landscape garden a reality.
So, how do you choose?
There’s no right answer to this question. The best thing to do is research first, know what skill level and creativity your contractor will need to complete the job to a high standard, and what products/materials you want used. Then you can decide which quote fits your needs best.
